Though Susan and I never met in person, she was the closest friend I had.

We were in constant contact daily--when the morphine wore off.

She told me regularly how much I meant to her, and I let her know I loved and valued her. I have no doubt she let those closest to her know how very precious you all are to her.  Words rarely do justice to the contents of our hearts.

Our friendship was forged roughly 22 years ago when both of our first marriages ended. Times were so tough, we took turns sending each other a $20 bill back and forth between us to buy milk or bread or a tank of gas to get us through to our next paycheck.

Susan steadfastly supported me when my dad died in 2008, and when my mom died this May (of COVID19). And I supported her through the passing of her baby Sarah, her brother David, and lastly her dad.

From afar, I watched her kids grow up, and I felt more like their aunt, rather than an abstraction, a friend in NY. Her children are all grown now and establishing their own paths.

Now should have been the time for her next chapter.

In my heart and mind, in typical Susan fashion she would be apologizing to all of us for making us sad by leaving.

I will remember her boisterous laughter with gusto, her keen intellect, her great capacity for love, forgiveness, and accepting people for who and what they are--this is something I always admired about her.

I missed her before she even left us.

Much love and my deepest sympathy to all who loved her, but especially: her beloved Ahmed, Katie, Alex, Robin, Max, Maryam, and her mom Edna.

As a kid, I remember listening to my mother working late into the night. When I would wake up for school, she'd be working. She worked tirelessly to give my siblings and I a good quality of life. I remember sharing dinners and holidays with her where she would have to scurry away to work so we could continue to enjoy our days. She gave my siblings and I so much love. I will never forget her and will mourn her forever. I love my mother so very much and will always carry fond memories of her with me to everyone I meet.
